A friend of mine opened his wife's wardrobe and picked up a silk paper wrapped package.
"This," he said, "isn't any ordinary package." He unwrapped the box and stared at both the silk paper and the box and silk satin dresses inside.
"She got this the first time we went to Kashmir, 8 or 9 years ago. She has never put it on , was saving it for a special occasion. Well, I guess this is it."
He got near the bed and placed the gift box next to the other clothing he was taking to the funeral house.
Yes, his wife had just died. He turned to me and said, "Never save something for a 'special occasion'. Every day in your life is a 'Special occasion."
I still think those words changed my life.
Now I read more and clean less. Now a days I sit on the balcony without worrying about anything. I spend more time with my family, and less at work.
I understood that life should be a source of experience to be lived up to, not survived through. I no longer keep anything. I use crystal glasses every day. I'll wear new clothes to go to the departmental stores, if I feel like it.
I don't save my special perfume for special occasions, I use it whenever I want to. Even to the hairdresser. The words 'Someday....' and ' One Day...'are fading away from my dictionary.
If anything is worth seeing, listening or doing, I want to see, listen or do it now.
I don't know what my friend's wife would have done if she knew she wouldn't be there the next morning, this nobody can tell.
Each day, each hour, each minute, is special. Live for today, for tomorrow is promised to no-one.
If you're too busy to send this out to other people and you say to yourself that you will send it 'One of these days', remember that 'One day' is far away, or might never come.

திரைப்படங்களில் என்னை அதிகம் ஈர்ப்பது தொழில்நுட்பச் சமாச்சாரங்களே. குறிப்பாக அந்த மூவர். ஒளிப்பதிவாளர், எடிட்டர் மற்றும் இசையமைப்பாளர்.
ஒரு இயக்குநரின் கனவை செலுலாய்ட் வடிவில் உயிர்ப்பிக்கும் முயற்சியில் எடிட்டர் அவரது மூளை என்றால், ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் அவரது கண்கள் என்றால் இசையமைப்பாளரே அவரது இதயம் என்பேன்.
கதையைச் சிதைக்காமல் இயக்குநரின் மனதில் இருப்பதை இன்னும் உயரச் சென்று உணர்த்துவது பாடல்களைவிட பின்னணி இசைதான்.
அவ்வகையில் பின்னணி இசை என்ற துறையில் இளையராஜா தொட்ட உயரம் உச்சம் என்பேன். அருகில் யாரும் இல்லை எனலாம்.
மரணத் தருவாயில் கர்ண மந்திரமாய் என் காதில் ராஜாவின் How To Name It இழைய வேண்டும் என்று ஓர் உயில் எழுத உத்தேசம்.
எத்தனைபடங்கள் ராஜாவின் பின்னணி இசையின் காரணமாகவே முன்னணிக்கு வந்தன! எண்ணினால் எண்களுக்கு பஞ்சம் வரலாம்.

'சுந்தரி கண்ணால் ஒரு சேதி', 'சின்னத் தாயவள்' ஆகிய பாடல்களின் மெட்டுக்களும் படத்தில் இடம் பெறாத 'புத்தம் புது பூ பூத்ததோ' பாடலின் மெட்டும் அப்படத்தின் பல வலிமையான காட்சிகளில் வயலின் வாயிலாகவும் குழலின் வழியாகவும் நெடுகிலும் பொங்கிப் பிரவாகம் எடுத்து நாடியெல்லாம் சிலிர்ப்பூட்டின.
அந்தப் பின்னணி இசை தேனினிமையிலும் தேமதுரமானது. உருகிக் கரைந்து வருடிச் செல்வது.
அதே தளபதி படம்தான் மணி-ராஜா கூட்டணியின் கடைசிப் படைப்பான போது பெரும் இழப்பு இசை உலகுக்கு வந்தது.
அந்த இழப்பையும் இசையாக மொழிபெயர்த்து உருக்கமாய் உணர்த்த ராஜாவை விட்டால் இனி யாருமில்லை என்பதே ராஜாவின் பெருமை.

Dear daughter,
I am writing this to you because of three major reasons:
A) Life, fortune and mishaps are truly unpredictable. Nobody knows how long he lives.
B) I am your father, and if I don't tell you these, no one else will.
C) Whatever written is my own personal bitter experiences that perhaps could save you a lot of unnecessary heartaches.
Remember the following as you go through life.
1. Do not bear grudge towards those who are not good to you. No one has the responsibility of treating you well, except your mother and I. To those who are good to you, you have to treasure it and be thankful, and also you have to be cautious, because, everyone has a motive for every move.
When a person is good to you, it does not mean he really will be good to you. You have to be careful, don't hastily regard him as a real friend.
2. No one is actually indispensable, nothing is in the world that you must possess.
Once you understand this idea, it would be easier for you to go through life when people around you don't want you anymore, or when you lose what you wanted the most.
3. Life is short. When you waste your life today, tomorrow you would find that life is leaving you.
The earlier you treasure your life, the better you enjoy life.
4. Love is nothing but a transient feeling, and this feeling would fade with time and with one's mood.
If your so called loved one leaves you, be patient, time will wash away your aches and sadness. Don't over exaggerate the beauty and sweetness of love, and don't over exaggerate the sadness of falling out of love.
5. A lot of successful people did not receive a good education, that does not mean that you can be successful by not studying hard!
Whatever knowledge you gain is your weapon in life. One can go from rags to riches, but one has to start from some rags !
6. I do not expect you to financially support me when I am old, neither would I financially support your whole life.
My responsibility as a supporter ends when you are grown up. After that, you decide whether you want to travel in a public transport or in your limousine, whether rich or poor.
7. You honour your words, but don't expect others to be so. You can be good to people, but don't expect people to be good to you.
If you don't understand this, you would end up with unnecessary troubles.
8. I have bought lotteries for umpteen years , but could never strike any prize.
That shows if you want to be rich, you have to work hard! There is no free lunch ! Hardwork can never be substituted with shortcuts.
9. No matter how much time I have with you, let's treasure the time we have together.
We do not know if we would meet again in our next life.

In Tamil language, the word 'Mei' has more than one meaning. The most popular meaning of 'Mei' is truth. Another meaning of the word 'Mei' is the body. Kavignar Vaali beautifully wrote about mortality of life as follows;
"மெய் என்று மேனியை யார் சொன்னது?"
It means" Who claims the perishable Body as the immortal truth?"
We know pretty well that our body will perish after death. It becomes a prey to fire, earth or birds/ animals. Can't we do some thing constructive with this body which otherwise would perish?
What best could be done?
One of the richest and most powerful men in Brazil, Thane Chiquinho Scarpa, made waves when he announced plans to bury his million-dollar Bentley, so he could drive around his after-death-life in style.
He received lots of media attention and was severely criticized for the extravagant gesture and wasting of a precious commodity.
Questions loomed large. "Why wouldn’t he donate the car to charity? How out of touch with reality is this guy?" Unrelented, he still went ahead with the plan.
But, there’s a twist. Moments before lowering the car in the ground prepared for the burial of his Bentley, he declared that he wouldn't bury his car and then revealed his genuine motive for the drama.
Guess, What was his object behind that drama?
Just to create awareness for organ donation.
“People condemn me because I wanted to bury a million dollar Bentley, in fact most people bury something a lot more valuable than my car,” Scarpa said during a speech at the ceremony. “They bury hearts, livers, lungs, eyes, kidneys. This is absurd. So many people are waiting for a transplant and you bury your healthy organs that could save so many lives!”
Face palm. Isn't? An eye opener too.
Eye donation is not the destination. We have more valuable and irreplaceable natural spare parts in our body capable of giving a fresh lease of life to many who struggle for life on account of irretrievable loss of organs.
Tamil Nadu is the fore runner in this matter. Let all other States also follow the suit.
So let us change our mindset and spread the message for the noble cause of organ donation.
Mind, there is a life after death, if only we donate our organs.

நண்பர் இரண்டுமே தனக்கு புதிய தகவல் என்றார். இத்தனைக்கும் அவரது வாசிப்பு பரந்தது.
முதலாவது நமக்குத் தெரியாமல் இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் இரண்டாவது தகவல் நமக்குத் தெரியவில்லை என்றால் அது நமது குறை.
பாரதியை நாம் இன்னும் முழுமையாகப் படிக்கவில்லை என்று தான் தோன்றுகிறது.
வாழ்க்கையின் எல்லா கட்டத்திற்கும் நமக்குச் சொல்வதற்கு என்று பல செய்திகள் பாரதியின் எழுத்துக்களில் உண்டு.
தாகமுள்ள குதிரைகள் தான் தீரத்தை நோக்கிச் செல்லவேண்டும்.
காயத்ரி மந்திரத்திற்கு பாரதி தந்த தமிழாக்கம் இது:
"செங்கதிர்த்தேவன் சிறந்த ஒளியினைத் தேர்கின்றோம்; அவன் எங்களறிவினைத் தூண்டி நடத்துக"( பாஞ்சாலி சபதம்: 153)
'பாரதி சின்னப் பயல்' என்று தனக்குத் தரப்பட்ட எகத்தாளமான ஈற்றடிக்கு நெத்தியடியாக சிறுவனாய் இருக்கும் போது பாரதி பதிலடி கொடுத்த நிகழ்வு நம்மில் பலர் அறிந்ததே.
பாரதி இளம் வயதிலேயே மிகப் புகழ் பெற்றிருந்ததால் பொறாமையடைந்த காந்திமதிநாதப் பிள்ளை என்ற ஒரு புலவர் எல்லாரும் கூடியிருந்த சபையில் அவரை அவமானப் படுத்தும் நோக்கில்
'பாரதி சின்னப் பயல்' என்ற ஈற்றடியைக் கொடுத்து வெண்பா ஒன்றைப் பாடும்படி சொல்ல, காத்திமதி நாதப் பிள்ளைக்கு தக்க பாடம் புகட்டும் வகையில் பாரதி நொடிப்பொழுதில் பாடினார்:-
'ஆண்டில் இளையவன் என்றந்தோ, அகந்தையினால் ஈண்டிங்கு இகழ்ந்தென்னை ஏளனஞ்செய்- மாண்பற்ற காரிருள் போல் உள்ளத்தான் காந்திமதி நாதனைப்
பாரதி (பார் அதி) சின்னப் பயல்'
இதைக் கேட்டு சபையோர் பரிகசிக்க குறுகிப்போனார் காந்திமதி நாதன்.
இது நாம் அறிந்த செய்தி.
நாம் அறியாத மற்றொரு செய்தி இதில் உண்டு.
என்ன தெரியுமா?
அவ்வாறு பாடி முடித்த சில நிமிடங்களில் பாரதிக்கு மனம் ஒப்பவில்லை. தம்மில் வயதில் பெரியவரான காந்திமதி நாதன் என்ற புலவரை வசைபாடிவிட்டதாக மனம் வருந்திய பாரதி என்ன செய்தான் தெரியுமா?
கேட்டால் ஆச்சரியம் மேலிடும்.
முன்னம் தான் பாடிய வெண்பாவை அடியோடு மாற்றி விட்டு வேறொரு வெண்பாவினை சற்று நிமிடங்களில் இயற்றிப் பாடினான் பாரதி.
' ஆண்டில் இளையவன் என்றைய, அருமையினால் ஈண்டின்று என்னை நீ யேந்தினையால்- மாண்புற்ற காரது போல் உள்ளத்தான் காந்திமதி நாதற்குப்
பாரதி (பார் அதி) சின்னப் பயல்'.
சபையிலிருந்தோர் பாரதியின் பண்பினைப் போற்றினர் என்பது நாம் அறியாத வரலாறு.
இரண்டு பாக்களையும் ஒப்பு நோக்கிப் படிக்கும் போது பாரதியின் சொல்வன்மையும், மொழித்திறனும், கவியுள்ளமும், மனப்பாங்கும், பாட்டுத் திறனும் அழகாக வெளிப்படும்.
அதோடு அவனுக்கிருந்த மாண்பும் பளிச்சிடும்.
அது தான் பாரதி! வாழ்க நீ எம்மான்!
