At times interesting books come to our notice belatedly. After reading them we would regret having missed them earlier. Yet we get convinced by saying the time tested adage...better late than never.
Recently when i came across 'The Notebook' I never expected it to drag me to a totally different reading experience. I realised the value of the story after recollecting a part of it from the movie in the same name.
Some movies kindle our interest in reading the original story book too. This is one such story. Love Story.
The hesitation i had initially in reading book was that it belongs to the 'romantic stories' category that has lost its place in my priority list of late.
But i proved wrong after finishing the story. I was spell bound.
Love is after all all pervasive and the panacea for the problems the world has been facing. Romantic stories are oxygen to the souls.
Writing love stories with out exaggeration and with the real feel being spelt out is a big challenge. This book is one of the best love stories in my estimation and Nicholas Sparks has told the story with the required skill by filling his pen with passion, love, emotion and pain. In plain and lucid language.
It is a simple story of true and inspiring love life of Noah and Allie.
They had an affair. But due to family trifles they were separated. After 14 years and a week before Allie's wedding scheduled with Lon, Allie came to know of the whereabouts of Noah. She met her. The magical spell of their love is reborn. When asked to exercise her option between the two, she consulted her heart instead of brain and chose Noah.
Married and well settled. But they lived happily ever after was not the things followed. Allie suffered early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. He suffered arthritis and rheumatics disease. Alas. They sell their dream farm house that he built for her after initial separation. Got admitted in a critical care center. Her condition worneded. With a fond hope on the power of love Noah, at his advanced age he took the best care of Allie. But she sank to total memory loss and would him ' Who are you?'.
He suffered a stroke. Paralysed on the left. Not able to walk move and meet her. He did not give up. He read the jottings of their life from the pages of the notebook he maintained. Every day. With hope and no despair.
Though doctors gave up, his love proved right. On their fiftieth wedding anniverasaty he met her and slid a letter beneath her pillow.
And, OMG, it happened. She identified him. Called him by name. Hugged and kissed him. Deep and passionate kiss. Full of Love. Sheer Love. The Love that moves the world.
The story ends with this positive note. The author has displayed the most powerful feel of the world in a moving manner that no one could disapprove what the lead characters did.
The poetry recitation habbit of Noah and the painting skills of Allie and the country side beauty of America, the minutest details of Alzheimer's, all penned well by Nicholas Sparks.
To quote Bible...' May be it's love's labor lost; or love's laborer lost. But true love never loses'.
Love, like time, is what we require most. But, Alas, what we use worst!
Indeed an awe- inspiring story !!
